Night book summary by chaptr1/7/2024 Later, Eliezer discovers that it was a family friend in the Hungarian police trying to warn them to escape.Įliezer goes to wake up some of his father's friends, and then everyone cooks and packs in preparation to being deported. Someone from outside the ghetto knocks on the door, but disappears before the door can be opened. Eliezer and the neighbors disperse to pack and wake everyone else up. When he returns from the meeting, he tells them that all the Jews are to be deported to an unknown destination and that they will only be allowed one bag per person. ![]() ![]() Family and neighbors wait up past midnight to hear whatever news Eliezer's father has to tell them. One day Eliezer's father is suddenly summoned to a meeting of the Jewish council. Once again, however, life returns to "normal," with the Jews setting up organizations and socializing happily. Next, two ghettos are set up, and everyone is relocated. Jews are not allowed to leave their homes, are forced to give up their valuables, and are required to wear the yellow star. Even then, the Germans seem nice and friendly, at least until Passover, when the persecution of the Jews begins in full force. Even after the townspeople hear that the Fascists have come into power in Hungary, no one really worries until the Germans actually invade Hungary and arrive at Sighet itself. The Jews do not really consider that anything bad could happen to them, and even though Eliezer asks his father to emigrate to Palestine, his father does not want to start a new life elsewhere. In the spring of 1944, people believe that the Germans will soon be defeated by the Russians, and no one believes that the Nazis could want to exterminate an entire race of people. Eliezer devotes himself to his religious studies, his father busies himself in the Jewish community, and his mother tries to find a husband for Hilda. He tells Eliezer that he miraculously survived the concentration camps in order to save the Jews in Sighet, but life continues on as normal during 19. Everyone thinks he is trying to win sympathy or has simply gone insane. He tries to warn the townspeople of the atrocities that he has seen, but no one believes him. Several months later, Moché returns, having escaped from a concentration camp in Poland. ![]() One day Moché and other non-Hungarian Jews are deported by Hungarian police, but the incident is forgotten by the other Jews and dismissed as a normal wartime practice. Moché teaches him not to search for answers from God, but rather to try to ask the right questions. Despite his father's lack of support, Eliezer decides to study the cabbala anyway and chooses Moché as his teacher. ![]() In this passage we learn that Eliezer's father is highly regarded in the Jewish community and pays more attention to outside matters than to family ones we also learn that Eliezer has two older sisters, Hilda and Béa, and a younger one, Tzipora. In 1941, when he is twelve, the narrator, Eliezer Wiesel, wants to study the cabbala (a form of Jewish mysticism), but his father tells him that he is too young. Moché is generally well liked, works in the Hasidic synagogue, and is a very pious and humble individual. Night opens with a brief description of a poor man named Moché the Beadle, who lives in the narrator's hometown of Sighet, Transylvania (modern-day Romania at the time that the novel opens, the town is under Hungarian control). Chapter 1 "They called him Moché the Beadle"

Af filter intake grates1/7/2024 ![]() ![]() The results are presented as curves from which total compression power requirements can be estimated for any desired enrichment level at any delivery pressure. Power requirements and capital costs for oxygen production and enriched air compression for enrichment levels from 13 to 50% are determined. They are designed to minimize net system power required to supply pressurized, oxygen-enriched air to the combustor of an MHD power plant with a coal input of 2000 MWt. A.Ĭryogenic air-separation process cycle variations and compression schemes are examined. The selectively permeable membrane separates nitrogen and oxygen from the diverted air so that oxygen enriched air containing from about 23% to 25% oxygen by volume is supplied to the intake of the engine.Įbeling, R. The secondary path includes a selectively permeable membrane through which the diverted portion of the ambient air flows. In order to decrease the amount of carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions that tend to be produced by the engine during a short period of time after the engine is started, the air directing apparatus diverts for a short period of time following the start up of the engine at least a portion of the ambient air from the air filter through a secondary path. During normal operation of the engine, ambient air flowing from an air filter of the engine flows through the air directing apparatus into the intake of the engine. Stork, Kevin C.Īn oxygen-enriched air intake control system for an internal combustion engine includes air directing apparatus to control the air flow into the intake of the engine. Method and apparatus for reducing cold-phase emissions by utilizing oxygen-enriched intake air ![]() As a result, the air being supplied to the intake of the engine can be regulated with respect to the concentration of oxygen and/or nitrogen. The oxygen enriched air or the nitrogen enriched air becomes mixed with the ambient air in the mixing chamber and then the mixed air is supplied to the intake of the engine. Alternatively, a portion of the nitrogen enriched air can be supplied through another control valve to a monatomic-nitrogen plasma generator device so that atomic nitrogen produced from the nitrogen enriched air can be then injected into the exhaust of the engine. The oxygen enriched air and the nitrogen enriched air can be selectively supplied to the mixing chamber or expelled to atmosphere. The permeable membrane device separates a portion of the nitrogen in the ambient air so that oxygen enriched air (permeate) and nitrogen enriched air (retentate) are produced. At least a portion of the ambient air flowing to the mixing chamber is selectively diverted through a secondary path that includes a selectively permeable air separating membrane device due a differential pressure established across the air separating membrane. ![]() Both candidates were bidding to become historic “firsts”-the first African American president or the first woman president.īut Obama had three crucial advantages that enabled him to eke out a narrow victory for the Democratic nomination. ![]() Overall, Clinton won twenty primaries to Obama’s nineteen, including victories in most of the large states, notably California, Texas, New York, New Jersey, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Other contenders for the nomination, including Senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, Senator Joseph Biden of Delaware, and Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico, had already dropped out because of their poor showings in the initial round of primaries and caucuses.įrom February through early June, Obama and Clinton battled fiercely through the remaining primaries and caucuses. Edwards finished a distant third in the state where he was born and dropped out of the race on January 30. Black voters, convinced by the Iowa results that whites would vote for an African American candidate for president, gave him overwhelming support in South Carolina and in subsequent primaries. In the next important test, Obama opened up a narrow lead in the nomination contest by defeating Clinton handily in the South Carolina primary, 55 percent to 27 percent, on January 26. Clinton rebounded to win the New Hampshire primary five days later, edging out Obama by 3 points and crushing Edwards by 22 points. He became the co-frontrunner in the race by winning the crucial Iowa caucuses on January 3, 2008, defeating both Edwards and Clinton by an 8-percentage point margin. Former Senator John Edwards, the Democrats’ vice presidential nominee in 2004, was also widely regarded at the start of the campaign as a stronger candidate than the inexperienced Obama.ĭrawing on his online base of supporters, Obama initially surprised political pundits by matching Clinton and besting Edwards in campaign fundraising throughout 2007. Initially, however, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton opened a strong lead in the polls, even among African American voters and leaders who admired her and her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and did not think Obama had much of a chance to win. (After he was elected, OFA was recast as Organizing for America for the purpose of rousing public support for Obama’s legislative initiatives.) With Axelrod again at the helm, the campaign developed a strategy for winning the Democratic nomination that relied on assembling the same coalition of blacks and white liberals that had enabled him to succeed in Illinois, with an additional focus on young voters. Relying heavily on the Internet, the Obama campaign mobilized Obama for America (OFA), a massive grassroots organization of volunteers and donors. Obama announced his presidential candidacy on February 10, 2007, at a rally in front of the Old State House in Springfield, Illinois, where Abraham Lincoln had given his famous “house divided” speech in 1858. According to annual National Journal evaluations of senators' legislative voting records, Obama ranked as the first, tenth, or sixteenth most liberal member of the Senate, depending on the year. After spending a low-profile first year in office focusing on solidifying his base in Illinois and traveling abroad to buttress his foreign policy credentials as a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Obama spent much of 2006 speaking to audiences around the country and mulling whether to run for president. “Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally.Obama’s election to the Senate instantly made him the highest-ranking African American officeholder in the country and, along with the excitement generated by his convention speech and his books ( Dreams from my Father, brought back into print, joined The Audacity of Hope on the bestseller list), placed him high on the roster of prospective Democratic presidential candidates in 2008. The ensuing partisan battles led George Washington to warn of “the baneful effects of the spirit of party” in his Farewell Address as president of United States. Federalists coalesced around the commercial sector of the country while their opponents drew their strength from those favoring an agrarian society. ![]() The Federalists, led by Secretary of Treasury Alexander Hamilton, wanted a strong central government, while the Anti-Federalists, led by Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson, advocated states’ rights instead of centralized power. Friction between them increased as attention shifted from the creation of a new federal government to the question of how powerful that federal government would be. Political factions or parties began to form during the struggle over ratification of the federal Constitution of 1787.

Difference between sat and act1/7/2024 Word problems, real-world contexts, charts and graphs are plentiful. You need to not only understand how to solve an algebraic equation (fluency) but also be able to create an algebraic equation or graph to model and solve a real-world problem (conceptual understanding and application). About 60% of the math on the SAT is Algebra I and Algebra II. The SAT Math test requires a deep understanding of a relatively small number of math topics, testing fluency, conceptual understanding, and application. The Math Section scores are also weighted differently in calculating your total test score. While both cover a similar range of math concepts from pre-algebra to basic trigonometry, they have different approaches to skill assessment. These are probably the two sections that are most different from each other. Here, we get into the finer details of the differences between the Math sections of the ACT and SAT. The SAT is comparatively much more generous on time, so for students who work slowly, and especially those who read slowly, the SAT is usually a better option. If you’ve read our post about choosing between the ACT and SAT, you know that they have distinct styles and that taking a practice test of each will help assess which is best for you. This is especially true on the Reading and Science sections where most adults would probably have difficulty finishing the sections in time. The biggest difference, however, and one that is sometimes overlooked, especially by students or parents who don’t understand the tests that well, is that time is much, much tighter on the ACT. The Biggest Difference Between the SAT and the ACT Really both exams draw from a similarly sized body of content and both tests seek to go beyond that content to assess how that content is applied by the test taker and the reasoning and critical thinking skills that go along with that. And while it is true that content is slightly more important on the ACT Math section it’s also the case that ACT Math questions tend to be more approachable from a strategic perspective. Really the only sections on the ACT where content is a major factor are the English and Math sections, and the volume of content tested on the ACT English section is roughly equivalent to that tested on the SAT Writing section. The truth is that they both attempt to assess a test taker’s reasoning and critical thinking ability based on a content base that is similar and that largely overlaps. The section does NOT test what you learned in Science class! But for someone who is either really good or really bad at Math, the SAT does have two Math sections to the ACT’s one, and that IS a difference since Math represents 50% of one’s SAT score but only 25% of one’s ACT score.Ĭonventional wisdom is that the ACT is a content test and the SAT a reasoning test – even most tutors and test prep companies perpetuate this myth. Although it might seem that the ACT tests an additional “subject” by including a Science section, its better to think of the Science section as a sort of science-based reading comprehension section that includes graphs and charts. The main difference on a structural level is that the SAT has 2 Math sections whereas the ACT subs out one of those Math sections for a Science section. Despite the different sounding names, the “Writing” section of the SAT and the “English” section of the ACT are actually almost identical (they are both grammar-based sections). The truth is that they both attempt to assess a test taker’s reasoning and critical thinking ability based on a content base that is similar and that largely overlaps”.īoth tests have 4 main sections – the SAT has Reading, Writing, and 2 Math sections and the ACT has Reading, English, Math, and Science. For more information about which test to choose CLICK HERE and about our methodology for ACT tutoring CLICK HERE “Conventional wisdom is that the ACT is a content test and the SAT a reasoning test – even many tutors and test prep companies perpetuate this myth. The following is a general description of the similarities and differences between the SAT and ACT. That said, there are differences between the tests. Both tests are essentially reasoning tests and both tests are based off of a very similar content base, so our approach to tutoring both tests is accordingly very similar. Despite popular misconception, the SAT and ACT are actually much more similar than they are different.

Real rose quartz necklace1/7/2024 ![]() Rose quartz has been known to be photosensitive. If it comes into contact with such chemicals, immediately wipe it clean. Always keep rose quartz jewelry (or any gemstone jewelry for that matter) away from chemicals and detergents, including hairspray, cosmetics or perfumes. When engaging in vigorous activities, such as gardening, playing sports or swimming, take your rose quartz jewelry off to keep it safe. ![]() Suitable maintenance will ensure a long and happy life for your rose quartz jewelry. While rose quartz itself is not expensive, it can command high prices depending on the quality of the setting, the materials used and the brand name of the designer. It’s increasingly being used to create beautiful and well-crafted pieces as the demand for colored gemstones continues to rise. Rose quartz is very popular in craft jewelry and is often used in rough or cut form. Taken this way, there really isn’t enough incentive to produce rose quartz in laboratories. While there is synthetic rose quartz, this is not common in jewelry as natural rose quartz is plentiful and affordable. Rose quartz is sometimes treated with radiation to enhance and intensify its pink color, but in general, specimens on the market are in their natural form. Synthetic, Treated and Imitation Rose Quartz.Rose quartz is a variety of the abundant quartz family while morganite comes from the beryl family and is a cousin of illustrious gemstones such as emerald and aquamarine.Morganite is much more valuable than rose quartz and retails at a much higher price. This means that morganite is able to scratch rose quartz. ![]() In terms of durability, morganite ranks at 8 on the Mohs scale and is quite a hard gemstone whereas rose quartz ranks at 7. ![]() As a result, morganite is often used for engagement rings and other important types of jewelry while rose quartz remains a minor gemstone. Morganite has excellent transparency and luster whereas rose quartz is almost always milky or hazy. Here are some fundamental differences between rose quartz and morganite: Morganite is a much more valuable gemstone than rose quartz. While they are generally easy to tell apart, some shoppers are confused by the similarity of these gemstones, especially when in rough form. Morganite and rose quartz are very similar in terms of color. Rose quartz can also be cut into numerous gemstone shapes, including more uncommon shapes such as Asscher, emerald, the rose cut and so on, although this is much less commonly done and often only with more transparent varieties. These are commonly cut en cabochon which enhances its smooth, lustrous surface. Rose quartz occurs in large formations in nature, which means that large-sized gemstones can be fashioned out of the rough. Rose quartz can sometimes contain rutile inclusions which can cause the stone to exhibit the highly desirable asterism effect, also known as the star effect. This is a feature that reduces the value of the gemstone and a step-behind other major pink gemstones such as kunzite, morganite and tourmaline. Rose quartz is often translucent, displaying a milky, turbid appearance. It’s believed that rose quartz gets its color from traces of titanium, manganese or iron present during the stone’s formation. See this beautifully designed pendant here. Rose quartz is known for its delicate, feminine shades of pink.
